Winter at Queens Park is the quietest time of the year in terms of visitors but the park is far from empty.
Dog walkers regularly use the park whatever the weather and a dog walking group regularly meet around 9am near the tennis court most days. Their Facebook page is here.
The cafe remains open and becomes even more of a welcome refuge from the cold weather. Hot drinks and hot food are served throughout the day. The perfect fortification to then go outside again and brave the elements.
The Junior Park Run is a very popular event held every Sunday and this continues right through the winter, weather dependant.
Winter definitely brings a slower rhythm to Queens Park but with the park benefitting from year round maintenance it remains a popular place at weekends for the family.
The park really comes alive at this time of the year whenever there’s been fresh snowfall. Children and families flock to the Promenade area of the park as the grassy hill that slopes down to the fountain provides a perfect place to try snow sledging.
Snowmen pop up all around the park and the screams from kids having snowball fights carries through the cold winter air.
If we happen to have had a heavy fall of snow and you’re willing to get up early enough then a visit to the park will reward you with some of the best views that Queens Park has to offer.
Tree branches collect thick layers of snow and the paths around the park invite footprints to christen them.
Almost every corner becomes a beautiful photo opportunity and the park becomes quieter than ever as the snow muffles the sound and background noise of nearby traffic.
